San Francisco : For Christmas 2008, we spent some time in San Francisco with my mom and Melissa's dad. Fun was had by all. We spent one day taking a tourbus around the city, so I was busy taking pictures on the move..it was cold but the sky was extremely clear for the bay area. The night time shots were taken on the cable cars while moving at a brisk pace. It is always fun being in the city. Next time, I'll bring a tripod and get serious about taking a few good snaps.

Pavilion of Wings : This was my second trip to the Pavilion of Wings in Los Angeles. It was good day for shooting butterflies. I used my Canon 100mm f/2.8 Marco for all the shots. Fun was had by all. Following the butterfly exhibit, we hurried over to the Getty Center to catch the sunset and twilight light; unfortunately, the overcast weather was uncooperative.

La Jolla : What a great weekend with Steph and Harry. We visited "the cliffs" in La Jolla and were among many bracing against a bitter cold breeze but enjoying a warm and beautiful sunset. We had a good time eating, talking about school, and taking the train to San Diego from Fullerton.

Mission Inn : A Riverside landmark since 1903, the Mission Inn looks remarkably well these days. We arrived in Riverside to catch the late afternoon sunlight. We started with exterior shots at the main entrance and in courtyard near the lobby, and we finished with a walk around the exterior. There was plenty more to shoot on the second, third, and fourth floors but those pics must wait for another day. We ended the day at Starbucks viewing pics and customizing the 40D....bigs thanks to Tom and Tim.

On the USC campus : Gary, Tim and I spent the day watching USC, favored by 40 points, lose to Stanford. The day wasn't a total loss. As we wandered back to our car, we shot some buildings, Tommy Trojan, and the Shrine Auditorium. We finished the day stuffing our mouths at the Pantry and driving around downtown. Thanks Gary for knowing how to get around L.A.

Willowbrook at Oak Glen, CA : Kevin and I spent the last weekend of September at the Willowbrook Apple Farm in Oak Glen, California. Starting their 4th apple picking season, the Swansons are giving a tour to some elementary school children and their parents. The children enjoy a tractor ride and sample some homemade apple butter and chips. The children also learn that you need 20lbs of apples to press 1 gallon of apple cider--the parents and children share the work of grinding and pressing the apples. After the tour of Willowbrook, the children hike above the creek to a beauty park overlooking the nearby farms. The children enjoy themselves as they drink their cider and munch on their carmel apples. What a special place Willowbrook is. When you leave, you feel like you've been with family, and you are given a heartfelt invitation to come back. I encourage you to visit Willowbrook in Oak Glen sometime in October.

Las Vegas fun : Our trip to Vegas was for fun and relaxation. We stayed at the NewYork, New York hotel on the 21st floor overlooking the MGM and sunrise mountain. The night shots were taken from the window in our room. The other shots were during mid-day in front of the hotel. We had a good time there, but we knew better to stay only for a few days.

Haiku Gardens : Nestled beneath the Koolau Mountains in Kaneohe, Hawaii, is the tropical landscape of Haiku Gardens. This is a beautiful, peaceful place full of tropical vegetation and colorful flowers. It is also the place where my wife and I exchanged wedding vows many years ago. These photos were taken mid-day during a christmas visit last year. Soon, my wife and I will be celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary at the Haiku Gardens as we did 10 years ago. I am looking forward to shooting this beautiful landscape once again.

backyard : Except for the first photo, which was taken at Jefferson's Monticello, these beautiful flowers reside in my backyard in various pots and containers. I used my Canon 300D with a 100mm marco lens on most of the shots. The photo objective here was to learn how to adjust the AV for depth of field.

More Zoo : Another great day at the zoo. The weather was great and the crowd was manageable. Thanks to Tom for his advice and encouragement. It was great meeting Rick, Howard, and Michael (sparky). On this outing, I used my new Sigma 120-400mm lens. I got mixed results. Lots of shots were out of focus after cropping, so I might have to send it back.

Hollywood at Night : Tom and I ventured out among the hordes of people walking along Hollywood Blvd...it was my first time shooting Hollywood at night. It was a pleasure meeting Marc, and I enjoyed learning a few new camera tricks for night time shooting....thanks, Tom. We ended the evening rather late at Starbuck at the Kodak Theater complex...Wow. We viewed snaps, exited Hollywood Blvd, and listened to some fine music on our way back to Pasadena. Fun was had by all.

Las Vegas Revisited : This was our second visit to NY NY in Vegas and fun was had by all. These shots were taken at the corner of Las Vegas and Tropicana Blvds. and from our hotel room. Even at midnight, the temperature was in the 90s, so I stayed close to the hotel. I used the walkway that connects the 4 main hotels. Overall, we had a nice time in Vegas and left with some money in our pockets. We returned in January 2009 for Melissa birthday and stayed at the Palazzo. We saw Bette Midler and the Jersey Boys. We had a great time.
